Here at Motives, we strive to empower people everywhere to look and feel beautiful inside and out and provide people with an opportunity to live the lifestyle they have always dreamed of. I recently interviewed Beauty Advisor Ivey Ray. She has incorporated Motives Beauty Brand's products and tools to grow her career as a Professional Makeup Artist. Ivey is breaking boundaries within all of our divisions and continues to build her empire with others. Way to go, Ivey! Thank you for inspiring us and constantly helping those around you to succeed.
How were you introduced to Motives?
First I want to thank you for choosing me to interview for the Breaking Boundaries with Motives Cosmetics series! I love Motives!
In 2017, My friend and "work wife" Jaxx Menconi (now business partner) introduced me to the Motives Cosmetics line while we were working on-set together in New York City. We had been connected for years before that moment through a tv industry list serv email chain (showing my age!) and happened to both be booked on-set for a commercial shoot with Jaxx on beauty makeup, and myself on SFX makeup.
Before I was introduced to Motives, I had worked professionally in the entertainment business since 2009. I am a former Associate Producer for Reality Television, and switched my career to Makeup Artistry in 2014. Since then, I had been specializing in beauty & special effects makeup for television and commercials. I also had a growing bridal business in the luxury wedding space at the time, which has now blossomed into another avenue of my professional career.
What made you want to learn more and eventually align yourself with Motives?
I partnered with Market America & Motives Cosmetics because I saw the need to be able to service my clients in a more intimate, one-on-one fashion with continuous contact, offering the very best product recommendations in makeup, skincare, and wellness. I was getting fed up with being a "one and done" makeup artist, basically seeing my client one day and not seeing them again until they needed makeup for a special event. I love seeing my clients! Motives moves with the market so I'm able to stay on top of trends all while using mineral based, pro-grade makeup and skincare that won't clog my clients pores or stop me down to have to troubleshoot while running a high volume on-location and makeup consulting business, by myself. Although I’m based in New York City, I offer an array of virtual services, including lessons, product consultations, and my popular virtual class Headshots from Home, on a national and global level. Sometimes I wake up at 2am to cater to clients in different time zones, virtually!
How have you leveraged the training & events to build your belief to propel your success?
The education the company provides is second to none. The trainings also touches on the business of beauty. Makeup school skimmed the surface of the business side, but I was never taught how to properly market myself until I took the Market America training classes, it's especially helpful that I can take them with different trainers each time to get different perspectives. I have quadrupled my consulting business because of the Motives trainings.
The events are incredibly uplifting. Watching Loren Ridinger's ease on stage at convention being strong and powerful because she's authentic is awe inspiring. She’s extremely empowering, and you can see she truly cares about the success of everyone she touches. You can’t help but feel emotional when you hear her public speaking. It’s like she’s gripping your heart and soul. She wants you to succeed because why not and why not you!?
In what ways has incorporating Motives into your business changed things for you?
Motives gave me the confidence to try my hand in influencer marketing, which has proven to be really successful. I’m teaching folks who follow my social media channels what I offer, how to use makeup and skincare as a self-care tool to aesthetically elevate their looks, and have created a little community to call my own. I would never have had the road map to do this without the company's training and support.
What goals has Motives helped you achieve?
If you would have told me 14 years ago I would be a working makeup artist in New York City, along with an in-person and virtual consulting business to boot, I would not have believed you. Not only do I work with celebrities ongoing, but Motives products have touched a lot of their faces on-set! I trust Motives through and through to perform for me everytime I'm in a high stakes situation in my makeup career.
What do you feel is the best way to expand your Motives team?
Brand yourself genuinely and authentically. If you sound salesy, you probably are. Come from a place of actually wanting to build community and help people gain as much success as you have or even more. I feel jazzed to think that someone could benefit greatly from my mentoring! Reword things so it feels natural in your captions and in your correspondence with people. Make people feel special and worth noticing, because you took the time to evaluate that they are!
What are you most excited about in regard to long term goals leveraging Motives?
As I'm getting older, I am looking to a future where I achieve my dreams consulting from my computer, without the physical demands of traveling and working on-location. A lot of freelancers deal with last minute bookings, which mean time away from family and late nights, and I know as I grow with Motives, I can tap into the tools the company provides to work smarter not harder, achieving my dreams (and I have HUGE goals and dreams!) without sacrificing the health of my body.
